EUGENE, Ore. — Bernard Lagat, who has won two Olympic medals for Kenya, qualified for his first United States Olympic team on Monday night, making a move in the final half lap to win the 5,000 meters at the track and field trials.

Lagat, 33, won a bronze medal for Kenya in the 1,500 meters at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and a silver in the 1,500 at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He also became an American citizen in 2004. Competing in his inaugural competition for the United States, he won the 1,500 and 5,000 meters at the 2007 world track and field championships in Osaka, Japan.
