At least they aren't drilling for whale oil

Polar bear harassment by oil companies challenged

Typical Bush Administration goings on. Oil company wants to drill in arctic. US Fish and Wildlife says okey dokey. Environmental and animal groups complain. US Fish twists the knife and breaks it off by providing protection........to the oil companies if they accidentally kill polar bears and walrus' (walri?). Money quote:
Fish and Wildlife Service officials said oil and gas exploration will have a negligible effect on the bear and walrus populations. Global warming is most likely to cause the animals' numbers to dwindle, the agency said.
That's right, the official policy of the US Fish and Wildlife Service is "fuck 'em, they'll die from global warming faster than the oil companies can kill 'em." Now some would think that the Fish and Wildlife Service is supposed to protect fish and wildlife. No. You are the shining obelisk of wrong. The oil company will monitor the bears, and if they kill too many they will report it. Honest. No crossed fingers.
