Gay Presidents

Zogby poll: Majority of voters could support openly gay presidential candidate

More than six in ten U.S. voters say they could support an openly gay candidate for president of the United States, according to a new nationwide poll from Zogby International.

The poll, conducted for the Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute, asked 1,089 likely voters if they would support an openly gay president, U.S. senator, vice president or cabinet-level secretary if they believed the individual was the most qualified person for the job. Sixty-five percent of survey participants indicated that they “strongly” or “somewhat” agree they could support the presidential candidate.

Sorry to rain on you GLBT pride parade, but no. Yeah....no. Aside from the fact that this poll was done by Zogby, who hasn't had an accurate political poll in a number of years, it doesn't really pass the smell test. It's 2008 and there are large sections of this country still averse to blacks and women as Presidential candidates. I don't see them moving in great numbers to support gay candidates when gay marriage is still one of the biggest "get out the conservative vote" wedge issues going, do you?

What's the most common slur of Democrats other than "tax and spend"? That they're effite, French, pampered, girly girls, who aren't real men, and are secretly gay but we won't ever say gay so we don't look like overt bigots......and they're gay...really gay. For an example see every Maureen Dowd column for the past decade. You can't get away with race baiting, or even the appearance of race baiting, but gay baiting is fun for the whole family. As long as that standard still applies and as long as religious gay bashing is still an effective wedge issue and GOTV measure I don't think you have much hope for an openly gay president.

Lincoln doesn't count.

But enjoy the Hallmark cards. Two tuxedos, get it? You also have the liberal cities and counties to look forward to. Jared Polis should win in a walk and that's a fairly big step. But I think president is still a few election cycles off.
