Most states don't recognize gay marriage - but now Hallmark does. The nation's largest greeting card company is rolling out same-sex wedding cards - featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts or intertwined flowers, with best wishes inside. "Two hearts. One promise," one says.Sure they're non-specific, you don't want to eat the printing costs of a card that says 'congrats on your gay civil union' and then it gets repealed in a ballot initiative. But you matter in the eyes of Hallmark, gay community. Maybe matter isn't the word, but you are recognized as having money and having friends with money who would like to purchase card stock with two tuxedos on it. In the end isn't being recognized as an underutilized and exploitable market share just as good? You've made it! Plus if civil unions get repealed, Hallmark is ready with some forlorn Ziggy cards that really will help ease the transition back into government approved second class relationship status. Go purchase, GLBT community! It is your duty as part of the greeting card marketplace now.
Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay marriage. A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions.
The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure.
