Musings on this joyous September day

A happy and joyous 9/11 day to you all. You're probably sitting in an office or with your loved ones, about to cut into one of two rectangular, grey ice cream cakes or one large pentagon shaped apple pie. Perhaps you're sitting by the 9/11 tree, looking to see if Rudy Giuliani ate the cookies and milk you left for him, hoping that he gave you the customary 9/11 gift of a threatening letter demanding you vote Republican and a bill for $100,000. Perhaps you've set the Tivo to record "It's the day that changed everything, Charlie Brown." Just remember: never forget.

Today our candidates are putting aside partisanship to do a joint photo op at Ground Zero. How Obama was let the through the security checkpoint that is clearly labeled "Republicans Only" is a mystery, but I imagine it was Bloomberg who let him pass. They'll probably lay some flowers and a wreath and release some statement about "Never again" and then resume tomorrow talking about the important issues: pigs, wolves, lipstick, outrage, fish, and mooseburgers. Note how Barack Obama acts at Ground Zero, note that however respectful and proper you think he acts John McCain and his cohorts will have a web ad out tomorrow decrying his disrespectful conduct, perhaps blaming William Ayers for 9/11 and saying Obama was going to be the 20th hijacker but he was too busy trying to get elected as a community organizer at Tony Rezko's in San Francisco. Hopefully the McCain campaign will at least wait until tomorrow to make a press release about how only McCain can stop the next 9/11. Keith Olbermann can only gin up the outrage every other day, have mercy.

Whatever you do don't remember how bin Laden is still walking around free, perhaps strutting, or note the Bush Administration's failure to capture him. As Dana Perino put it "This is not the movies. We don't have super powers." Though the administration still holds out hope that bin Laden will fall victim to their elaborately conceived honey-trap in Iraq. Any day now, he's just going to go over there to dick around and....net traps are triggered, sticks propping up large boxes are knocked out, coyotes with rocket skates are deployed, and viola......he is captured.

Just remember that what you see today and in the coming days isn't cheap exploitation of the public's fears and memories. Because...9/11...changed...everything. Never forget. Eternal vigilance.
