Picture of the day

via Wired Science, the European Southern Observatory, and photographers Serge Brunier and Frédéric Tapissier, comes a 360 degree panorama of the Milky Way based off of 1200 photos. As cool as the "click to embiggen" photo above is, it really doesn't do justice to what they've done. Go here to see a larger photo that is not only more detailed, but is high-high-high-res and zoomable to an absolutely insane degree. Here is another version of the photo that is cliackable so it tells you what specifically you're looking at, as well a descriptions and histories of various visible nebula, stars, clusters, and frozen, slumbering, Lovecratfian elder Gods, waiting to awaken and bring forth the apocalypse.
