Serial Catastrophes in Afghanistan threaten Obama Policy
Juan Cole runs down the problems facing the Obama Administration in Afghanistan. They are not limited to killing schoolchildren a few too many times, enraging the Afghan public, provoking a student protest movement, double agents betraying us, the Afghan army not effectively existing/being dependable/not showing up to anything important/taking potshots at US troops, and the fact that the Afghan government barely functions if at all. But on the bright side, the law of averages states that a sometime somewhere something in that country has to go right and if we stick around long enough the chances are that it'll be a big and important thing. So... fingers crossed.
C.I.A. Is Sharing Data With Climate Scientists
That's right, the CIA is using spy satellites and specialized sensors to collect advanced data and assess "hidden complexities" in climate change in collaboration with scientists and universities. In addition they've been waterboarding polar bears three at a time to get them to spill the beans on glacier melting and they've rendered a few arctic foxes to Egypt for some "enhanced interrogation" about temperature data. Finally we're putting some government hardasses on the climate change front. A few targeted assassinations, a few rigged elections and we might finally get this problem licked.
New scanners break child porn laws
In the aftermath of the flight 253 flaming underwear bombing there have been renewed calls for the use of full body optical scanners to ferret out bombs, knives, and average genitalia size of your bog standard air passenger. But instead of merely whining about personal freedoms, police states, encroaching fascism, or civil liberties, opponents in the UK have opted for a different track: they say if you use it on a kid it's legally defined as child pornography. It seems all the civil liberties people have finally learned how to do battle. When it's security vs. civil liberties, civil liberties always gets handcuffed, beat up, and tased. But security vs. child pornography? That's a whole new ballgame. Who says hippies can't learn?
Hell Freezes Over: Rush Limbaugh Loves Union Hospitals and Socialized Medicine
Among the many thing that were hilarious about Rush Limbaugh's heart almost exploding were the fact that his heart nearly exploded, he was treated in the hospital at the center of the Obama birth certificate conspiracy, and that after months of railing against socialism, unions, and health care, he was subjected to all three and liked them without understanding that the hospital was the evil hotbed of socialism, unions, and Kenyan birth certificate fraud that it was. I know, I know "Rush Limbaugh doesn't understand something, gets facts wrong" isn't as much of a headline as it is a fact of daily existence. But it did give the SEIU a nice chance to tee off on him. Plus, as I've previously mentioned: his heart almost exploded. We're getting closer and closer to the day when the rotten fuck finally shuffles off this mortal coil.

Today in health care
Yeah, the fight is still going on and it will never end. Howard Dean is pissed and wants the bill killed. Paul Krugman feels it is underwhelming but saves lives. Keith Olbermann went all "Special Comment" on the bill. The unions are wondering what the hell they fought for. Cheaper prescription drugs and real cost savings on health care was killed. And now, near the end, two Senators are vying to extract their last pounds of flesh from the bill. In a surprise move, one of them actually has good intentions.
Independent socialist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is mad. Mad that reconciliation wasn't at least credibly threatened as an option, mad that his single payer bill was used as both a delaying tactic and not given a vote on the floor, and, as of now, he isn't voting for the bill. Whether he'll vote for cloture is another question, but he is concerned that the bill doesn't help enough people, cut costs enough, and provide real options to people. This makes him the first Senator all year to actually throw a tantrum in an attempt to extract something positive from the legislative process. Mark this on your calendar folks, it's a historic day.
The same cannot be said for Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson. He saw what Joe Lieberman got and now he's salivating over his power. And he will not vote for cloture until he shouts "Cave" and the Democratic leadership responds with a sufficient attempt to pile rubble on themselves. He's back on the abortion thing.
So, the horse trading isn't over and the fight to make the bill worse goes ever on. Likely they will end up trading women's rights for a health care vote, because really, the goal is to get anything passed at this point. And what's more important, passing a bill where opinions on it range from "deeply mediocre with the bad outweighing the good" to "deeply mediocre with the good minutely outweighing the bad" or women having some sort of personal rights to make decisions on their own? I think we know the answer to that.

And he will not vote for cloture until he shouts "Cave" and the Democratic leadership responds with a sufficient attempt to pile rubble on themselves. He's back on the abortion thing.
One issue that will be handled separately, though, is abortion. As I reported yesterday, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), who has been working with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), presented Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) with new legislative language on federal funding for abortion yesterday. Nelson says abortion is a make or break issue for him, and he regards the provision in the current Senate bill as too lax to support. If past discussions over the Stupak Amendment and the Catholic Bishops are any indication, Ben Nelson has turned over veto power on a health care bill and the right to try to recede women back into second class citizen status on matters of their own body to private abortion groups like the NRLC. Isn't that nice? On the bright side, the fight to get Ben Nelson to sign on has at least given Glenn Beck a nice platform to lob dishonest accusations of treason around. So there is that.
As of last night, Nelson hadn't had a chance to evaluate the new compromise. But according to Politico, Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee has already decided: "This proposal would break from the long-established principles of the Hyde Amendment by providing federal subsidies for health plans that cover abortion on demand. This is entirely unacceptable."
So, the horse trading isn't over and the fight to make the bill worse goes ever on. Likely they will end up trading women's rights for a health care vote, because really, the goal is to get anything passed at this point. Republicans, we have found your teabag king
With Sarah Palin roaming the countryside promoting her book in a hellstorm of lies, ignorant policy statements, lies, softball interviews, lies, and petty gamesmanship, we are left with no doubt that she is the charming dainty Queen of the Grand Duchy of Teabaggery. Ahh, but who will rule alongside her in political irrelevance? Many suitors have tried to claim the crown, but few have succeeded, letting the taint of rationality and moderation scuttle their ascension. Thankfully, Doug Hoffman has stepped up to the plate.
Oh, you thought he went away when his carpetbagging maelstrom of teabagging wisdom and local ignorance cause the people of NY-23 to elect the first Democrat there since whites owned blacks? Nope! On the advice of Glenn Beck (bonus points~!), Hoffman has not only unconceded the race he already lost and for which the winner, Bill Owns, has already been sworn in for and is casting votes in the House for, but has unveiled a conspiracy so deep and so nefarious that it will no doubt shake the very core of teabagger society.

“As evidence surfaces, we find out that reported results from election night were far from accurate. ACORN and the unions did their best to try and sway the results to Obamacare supporter Bill Owens," Hoffman wrote on his campaign site. "Rest assured, they will not succeed, and I am therefore revoking my statement of concession.”Dougy, Dougy, Dougy, aren't we forgetting the black hand of...well.....blacks, illegal immigrants and abortion doctors that helped steal this election from your deserving hands? Surely ACORN and labor unions alone couldn't derail this Hoffman juggernaut, could it? No, it was a conspiracy. ACORN has even gotten to Oswego County GOP Chairman George Williams and made him deny the truth. To the beverage aisle of your local supermarket, teabaggers! Your new king is going to need a lot of visible tea bag support and birth certificate analysis. Good luck. Expose this fraud for what it is.
...
"The people of NY-23 deserve to have their ballots counted properly, but we can't let ACORN or the unions keep that from happening. They have more lawyers and more experience tampering with democracy," he wrote.
"We need to make sure that fair elections are a reality in NY-23, just like our Founding Fathers envisioned. So long as we remain the "land of the free," we MUST ensure every vote is counted. Help us today so we may be the first of many conservative victories during the Obama Regime."

Labor Day CBC
Labor Day by the numbers
The Economic Policy Institute gives us the lowdown on the state of the economy as of this Labor Day. Maybe you don't want to look at it. Sure there are negative things, like the fact that we've lost jobs over the past decade and out future is shaping up to be bleaker than the Road, but hey, it might be a nice day out where you are.
Stiglitz: Odds of Robust US Rebound 'Very, Very Weak'
Yeah...always gotta love it when a Nobel laureate who saw the housing crisis coming, warned about the size of the bailout not being enough, fights crime in tandem with Paul Krugman, and has generally been right every step of the way warns that there's a greater chance for a double-dip recession than a robust recovery. But what does he know, he's only a genius economist? I saw everyone on CNBC and they seemed optimistic.
New Fee on Health Insurance Companies Is Proposed to Help Expand Coverage
Max Baucus has released his last ditch plan to get Republicans who will never vote for it...to vote for it. It's an immense shit sandwich that provides no public option, taxes insurance companies, involves weaker subsidies to get health insurance which might just burden the poor even more, and costs a lot of money to not do what its supposed to do. In other words: it pisses everyone while providing the added benefit of not fixing problems. But it does cost a lot. So at least it has that going for it.
Points of Comparison
TPM looks at what Baucus proposed as a comparison to other health care systems in the world. It sort of looks like Baucus is trying to create some sort of bastardized version of the Swiss system, which is the second most expensive health care system in the world behind the good ole United States of Freedom. This totally doesn't sound like a complete catastrophe for Democrats.
The Spreading Scandal In Jai Alai
In honor of the Mad Men episode from last night, I give you Sport's Illustrated's 1979 story on a Jai Alai gambling scandal. Mobsters, Connecticut, and Jai ALai, you try to stay away. This is the biggest reason Jai Alai isn't the most popular sport in America right now, I'm sure of it.

Broken News: “Spontaneous grassroots movements have no leaders" say movement leaders
WASHINGTON—With the recent push for health care and energy reform within the government, news coverage has been rife with stories of citizens and citizen groups being organized, exploited, and in some cases fabricated out of whole cloth in the service of large corporations and the interest groups that represent them on all sides of the debate.
Representatives from the various groups embroiled in the debates gathered today to assure everyone that these grassroots movements are in no way a naked extension of well-established political and corporate actors.
“We take offense to the notion that these expressions of support for our industry are anything other than populist movements in support of our agenda,” said Gerald Faraday, director of communications for the National Organization of Moderately Evil Pharmaceutical Conglomerates.
“That several of these groups seem to parrot our press releases word-for-word is just a happy coincidence. I’m not going to deny we offered help when we saw the public’s desire for the pharmaceutical industry to maintain its profit margins. That said, we provided assistance in only a few small areas: namely organization, funding, media strategy, and message. It’s not like we invented these groups in conjunction with PR firms, no matter what the New York Times or Washington Post claims those intercepted e-mails say.”
When some of the assembled media rabble pointed out those recently discovered memos show blatant collaboration between health care companies, lobbying firms, and the Republican Party in creating instructions for how these ostensibly "grassroots" organizations could best disrupt town hall meetings designed to open discussion on the issue, the assembled groups were quick to defend their practices.
“Look, we just wanted to make sure these groups knew how to best maximize our, I mean, their, interests,” said Dr. Victor Arlovsky, spokesman for the American Health Industry and a former convicted Crimean War criminal who is kept alive solely through his hatred of Sardinians. “And what better way to open the debate by making sure that anyone trying to intelligently talk about the matter was shouted and hooted down by easily organized childish armies of teabag-swinging birth certificate experts? We were merely advising, not organizing, encouraging, or busing in people. This is about the people’s outrage over cheaper health care.”
Questions quickly turned to the energy debate, where some energy companies had come under recent fire for hiring a public relations firm, Bonner and Associates, which subsequently forged letters from non-profit groups purporting to show them siding with the interests of the coal lobby. But those assembled today laughed off such accusations.
“Are we to extinguish the fires of American ingenuity as well?” asked energy lobbyist Eric Sandoval through a microphone powered by a coal fired generator that was quickly filling up the room with black smoke. “It was merely an artistic writing exercise that the media spun out of control. ‘What if Batman’s parents had lived?’, ‘What if Superman never landed on earth?’, ‘What if organizations that were opposed to our goals were to be shown to support them?’ You know: creative fiction.”
“But somehow once the media finds out we sent them to lawmakers, purely in the interest of getting their opinion on our creative works I assure you, then suddenly we’re ‘evil.’ We were merely positing a world in which everyone supported us,” he finished, noting that the smoke that several of the members of the media had begun to choke on was “just good old fashioned CO2”, that it was natural, and to stop complaining about the burning sensation in their lungs already.
The press conference began to take a nasty tone when the recently announced involvement of trade unions in the health care town hall meetings was discussed.
“Get fucked ya fuckin’ humps,” said Vinnie “Da Balls” DiNelco, Director of Outreach and Bustin’ the Heads of Fuckin’ Mouthy Pieces of Shit for the AFL-CIO. “What’s more fuckin’ grassroots than the one of the country’s largest unions gettin’ its members to invade these meetins to shout down those jagoffs from the pharmaceutical companies who’re shoutin’ at those assholes from Washington who take money out of our fuckin’ paychecks? Just two grassroots organizations cussin’ and fightin’ while nothing of importance is able to be discussed by the public at large. Now if you’ll excuse us, this meetin’ is fuckin’ over.”
With that, several groups of people ran into the room and proceeded to shout down additional questions, hoot, and hang media members in effigy.
“My God, a completely grassroots protest of our treatment at the hands of the vile media and their whorish masters in the Kingdom of Sardinia,” Dr. Arlovsky was heard to cry, before the shouting and ranting from the grassroots protesters drowned out all potential for worthwhile conversation. As members of the media left in disgust, some noted their disbelief at the gall of the proceedings but were surprised at the level of grassroots support that had been shown for the assembled industries.

Unions To Take On Conservative Groups Health Care Town Halls
You know what's even better than teabaggers and other right wing groups trying to shut down health care town halls and harass lawmakers? Teamsters and trade unionists vowing to "directly engage" hooting conservatives. Directly engage with lead pipes or just brass knuckles? I can't wait for it. "Health care is socialism! Barack Hussein is a Muslim!", "Hey youze! I 'll show yinzs assholes socialism. Shuddafuckup!", then "Gangs of New York" style mob rioting. I think this is the part right here where I'm supposed to sing "God Bless America."
White House Affirms Deal on Drug Cost
Hey, it's the Democrats looking out for you once again on health care. Turns out earlier announcements that the pharmaceutical industry had made a deal with the White House to voluntarily make efforts to save $80 billion (which means there's much, much more than that to actually be saved) had a few unannounced conditions attached. Namely that Congress wouldn't attempt to get them to save one cent more or have government negotiate drug prices. Boy, this all sounds so promising for real health care reform.
Man Offers 40 Goats And 20 Cows For Chelsea Clinton's Hand In Marriage
This was the proposed dowry offered by a Kenyan man to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her only daughter. Secretary Clinton promised to relay the offer to Chelsea, but tried not to fill the man with to much hope. However Bill was more open to the idea, provided the animals came pre-butchered for storage in his meat freezer and the beef ribs were hickory smoked.
Robinson can’t recall anything quite this nuts. Like everyone else, we can
Gene Robinson claims he can't recall anything from the right wing as crazy as the Obama birth stuff. The Daily Howler obliges to refresh his memory and runs down a greatest hits of the things that we widely held lunatic beliefs against Bubba, Hill-Dawg, and our moon worm riding former VP. No one's accusing Barry of running murder/drug ring....yet.
Staten Island mom settles suit with Little League and coaches over knee injury
Reason #34528940A of why I hate this country. A woman just got $125,000 because she sued the little league after her precious booger eater tore up his knee because he slides into bases like a spaz. Enjoy the money, kid, I hope it makes up for the endless ridicule and abuse you'll suffer from every kid in your district who hears about this.
Paris' Dog House Is Damn Comfortable!!
Reason #34528940B of why I hate this country. Paris Hilton just built a $325,000 300 sq. ft. house....for her dogs. That's right, Paris Hilton has a dog house worth more than your house. And you still think there's a God.

Unions are teh devilz!
Know how I know the Employee Free Choice Act, which makes it easier for people to join, form, or support labor organizations while penalizing companies that force unfair labor practices, is a good thing? All the right people are complaining and not just complaining, but screaming bloody incoherent murder about it.
"This is the demise of a civilization," said Bernie Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot. "This is how a civilization disappears. I am sitting here as an elder statesman and I'm watching this happen and I don't believe it."As an added bonus, fresh off of getting a big fat government bailout, Bank of America has decided to step up and try and make it harder for people to join unions. Unions are socialism, you know.
Donations of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars to Republican senatorial campaigns were needed, they argued, to prevent America from turning "into France."
...
"This bill may be one of the worst things I have ever seen in my life," he said, explaining that he could have been on "a 350-foot boat out in the Mediterranean," but felt it was more important to engage on this fight. "It is incredible to me that anybody could have the chutzpah to try and pass this bill in this election year, especially when we have an economy that is a disaster, a total absolute disaster."
So I just wanted to tell you that if you feel like civilization is ending and that the world is about to explode into a fiery ball of magma, it's not gay marriage this time, or even electing Democrats (not completely). It's making it easier for people to join a union. That's why we're all going to die. Socialism. Wait, no: Communism.
